The Tower is a South Korean mystery horror film, released on November 7th, 2016. It tells the story of two journalists who were investigating a real-estate fraud scheme that suddenly develops into something more sinister. The Tower was directed by Kim Jee-woon and produced by Lee Jeong-beom. The film stars Song Kang-ho as lead character Soo-hyeong, who tries to uncover the truth of the tower's origins while also trying to survive his colleagues who are beginning to turn on him at every turn. The Tower received widespread acclaim from critics and has grossed over $100 million worldwide on a production budget of less than $4 million. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2017 Academy Awards.Director Kim Jee-woon and producer Lee Jeong-beom had originally planned to make a film titled "The Tower". After the project fell apart, Kim and Lee found inspiration from "The House that Jack Built" (2011), which was released months after they were set to start shooting "The Tower". So the pair decided to rework "House" as a Korean version of the Swedish film called "Swedish drama". Production began in October 2014 and wrapped up in July 2015. Principal photography took place in Seoul, South Korea over 100 days. The scenes involving the tower were filmed in a set by the filmmaker in Jingukji, South Korea. The scenes in the elevator where scenes of Soo-hyeong being chased by two men were filmed by Jee-woon himself. Soo-hyeong's apartment, found on the first floor of apartment building is owned by director Kim Jee-woon himself. The apartment has 4 bedrooms and has an open kitchen, where it is shown that Soo-hyeong has made himself some noodles with eggs and rice cakes. The film was released on November 7th, 2016 earning $24 million on its first day internationally and $32 million worldwide. South Korean film expert Kim Kyung-hong rated the film 4.5/5 stars, stating "The Tower is a masterpiece...I can't help but to get excited about this film from the very beginning. The impressive cinematic effects of The Tower are amazing and so convincing that you can believe everything on screen." In their review, Variety wrote "Director Kim Jee-woon affects to make an effort at stylistic restraint in The Tower, but he ultimately uses its elaborate set pieces to compensate for the lack of genuine narrative drive... Kim's efforts to focus on the psychology of his characters aren't as well served by the illogical developments that lead to a resolution that feels as arbitrary as it is anticlimactic." Paolo Baia from "Influx Magazine" wrote " The Tower is a well-crafted, yet generic genre film with an obsession for details. As a psychological thriller, this one would have been truly thrilling had its illogical revelations been apparent from the beginning. In this sense, it might be said that Kim Jee-woon focuses too much on his technical capabilities and not enough on his apparent fascination for the world of real estate. cfa1e77820
